Product Description

Botanical Name: Boswellia carterii

Plant Family: Burseraceae (Frankincense family)

Botanical Description:
Boswellia sacra, commonly known as frankincense, is a resinous tree that belongs to the Burseraceae family. It is native to the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Oman, Yemen, and Somalia, as well as parts of Africa and India. Frankincense trees can grow up to 8 meters in height, with gnarled branches and papery bark. The leaves are compound and pinnate, arranged alternately along the branches. The tree produces small, white flowers with five petals, which are followed by greenish-yellow fruit capsules. The most prized part of the frankincense tree is the resin, which is obtained by making incisions in the bark. The resin exudes as a milky-white sap, which hardens into golden-yellow tears upon exposure to air. These tears are collected and used for their ritual and medicinal benefits.

Introduction:
Frankincense has been revered for its aromatic fragrance and therapeutic properties for thousands of years. It has a long history of use in various cultures, including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and China, where it was valued for its use in religious ceremonies, traditional medicine, and perfumery. Frankincense has a rich, warm, and resinous scent that is often described as woody, balsamic, and slightly citrusy. Frankincense resin is burned as incense or used in aromatic blends, essential oils, and herbal remedies.

Preparations:
Incense: Burn frankincense resin as incense using a charcoal disc or incense burner. Place a small piece of resin on the burning charcoal and allow it to smolder, releasing its aromatic smoke into the air. Use frankincense incense during meditation, prayer, or spiritual rituals to create a sacred atmosphere and promote relaxation.
Essential Oil: Use frankincense essential oil in aromatherapy diffusers, massage oils, bath blends, or skincare formulations. Dilute a few drops of frankincense essential oil in a carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond oil, and apply it to the skin for a calming and rejuvenating massage. Add a few drops of frankincense essential oil to bath water to promote relaxation and relieve tension.
Topical Applications: Topical frankincense applications include infused massage oils, salves, balms and skin creams.
