Product Description

Botanical Name: Cinnamomum verum

Plant Family: Lauraceae

Botanical Description:
True cinnamon, scientifically known as Cinnamomum verum, is an evergreen tree belonging to the Lauraceae family. Native to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), true cinnamon is also cultivated in other tropical regions, including India, Madagascar, and the Seychelles. The tree can grow up to 10-15 meters in height and features smooth, light brown bark that peels in thin strips. The leaves are oval-shaped, glossy, and dark green, with a prominent central vein. True cinnamon produces small, yellow-white flowers that are inconspicuous. The spice is derived from the inner bark of the tree, which is harvested by stripping the bark from the branches and allowing it to dry, curl, and develop into characteristic cinnamon quills or sticks. True cinnamon has a sweet, delicate aroma and flavour compared to other types of cinnamon.

Introduction:
True cinnamon has been prized for centuries for its culinary, medicinal, and aromatic properties. It is one of the oldest and most valuable spices known to humanity, with a rich history of use in various cultures around the world. True cinnamon is renowned for its distinctive flavour, aroma, and versatility in cooking and baking. In addition to its culinary applications, true cinnamon is also valued for its potential health benefits and has been used in traditional herbal medicine.

Preparations:
Cinnamon Sticks: True cinnamon sticks or quills can be used whole or ground in cooking and baking to impart flavour and aroma to dishes. They are commonly used to flavour desserts, beverages, curries, stews, and marinades. Cinnamon sticks can also be steeped in hot water to make cinnamon tea.
Cinnamon Powder: True cinnamon powder is made by grinding dried cinnamon sticks into a fine powder. Cinnamon powder is a convenient form of the spice and can be added to a variety of dishes, including oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, and baked goods. It can also be used as a seasoning for savoury dishes, such as soups, sauces, and meat rubs. Cinnamon powder may also be encapsulated as a dietary supplement for convenience.
Cinnamon Extract: True cinnamon extract is a concentrated liquid form of the spice, typically used for medicinal purposes or flavouring purposes.
