Botanical Description:
Celery, scientifically known as Apium graveolens, is a biennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is now cultivated worldwide for its culinary and medicinal uses. Celery has erect, ribbed stems that can grow up to 30-60 centimetres in height. The plant features compound leaves with serrated edges and small, white flowers arranged in umbels. Celery seeds are small, oval-shaped, and brown in colour, with a distinct aroma and flavour reminiscent of celery. The seeds are harvested from the mature umbels of the celery plant and used as a spice and herbal remedy.
Introduction:
Celery seed has been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for its therapeutic properties. Celery seed has historically been used in herbal medicine to support urinary tract health, reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and alleviate symptoms of arthritis and gout.
Preparations:
Celery Seed Tea: Prepare celery seed tea by steeping crushed celery seeds in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink as needed. Celery seed tea can be consumed hot or cold and may be sweetened with honey or lemon, if desired.
