Natural herbal remedies that could help you sleep better

Have you ever considered natural herbal remedies when it comes to improving your sleep?

Whilst the need for 8 hours of sleep is still up for debate, getting a good quality night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. Tossing and turning all night can leave you feeling groggy, tired and run down and this can also have a knock-on effect to how productive you are in things including work, your active life and even just your daily living. So making sure you do all you can to improve your sleep experience is a great start on your path to healthier living!

Here are some of our favourite medicinal herbs or natural herbal remedies that could help aid a good night’s sleep:

1. Valerian Root (Valerian officinalis)
Herbalists throughout the centuries have turned to valerian root to ease anxiety and insomnia. It used to be referred to as ‘Nature’s Valium’ for these reasons.

Historically Valerian was used to treat a range of symptoms including panic attacks, hysteria and disturbed sleep to name but a few. It was even used during the First and Second World Wars to treat both post-traumatic stress disorder for soldiers and also the anxiety of civilians following the events. It is now recognised as a sleeping aid and a great natural choice.

Valerian Root can be taken in several forms including tablet complex, or as a herbal tea.

2. Passiflora – Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata)
Passion Flower has been widely explored as an aid to a peaceful night’s sleep and in the treatment of anxious insomnia. Used throughout history as a natural sedative it is now recommended by the Commission E as an effective herb in the treatment of nervousness and disturbed sleep.

Nature’s Aid Passiflora Complex contains Lemon Balm & Avena Stevia, which when combined, offer a balanced formulation for anxious insomnia.

3. Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)
Similar to Valerian, chamomile has been used throughout the centuries as a sleep and relaxation aid. Perhaps the most widely talked about herbal tea on the market, its calming effects can soothe your nerves, reduce anxiety and ease insomnia.

The Herbalists sell the raw herb that can be made into tea, tincture or infusion.

4. Montmorency Cherries – A source of Melatonin
These sour cherries have been used for centuries to make preserves, jellies and juices but their medicinal use has also been noted due to their naturally high levels of melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in our bodies, made by the pineal gland in the brain, and low levels of this hormone can lead to difficulties sleeping.

Whilst you could sit and eat a bowlful of these cherries before bed every night, we also provide Montmorency cherry tablets and a concentrated juice for easy taking.

Try our Cherry Xtra tablets which are a natural source of Melatonin.

5. Magnesium
Naturally found in vegetables such as spinach, chard and also pumpkin seeds. Even a small deficiency in magnesium can cause fatigue, mental confusion, irritability, poor nerve and muscle function, cramps, stress and insomnia. This can have an effect on preventing your brain from settling down in the evening.

Fortunately, there are many sources for Magnesium; including tablet, external oils, salts etc. Epsom salts, for example, are a form of magnesium that are known to ease muscle aches and pain which can promote a relaxation making it easier to fall to sleep on a night.

Magnesium can be found in various tablet form, massage oil, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, salts and sprays. So you won’t be short of sources to boost your levels!
